SUMMARY

The Exploratorium has been a professional home and hub for preK-12 teachers and leaders and a local laboratory for global science learning for decades. The Exploratorium Teaching & Learning Department works with educators and leaders in both formal and informal settings to create and facilitate transformative learning experiences for educators that impact science teaching and learning. Our team's inquiry-based pedagogy is foundational to the work of the Exploratorium. We work with formal and informal educators around the world, prioritizing the San Francisco Bay Area and California as well as the needs of under-supported teachers, leaders, and learners.

The Project Director, Data and Impact supports the Teaching & Learning division by transforming program data and educator impact stories into accessible, actionable insights. This role ensures accurate participation tracking, strengthens institutional storytelling, and builds internal systems that connect our educational work to the museum's broader mission. Working collaboratively with Teaching & Learning leadership and across teams-including Institutional Advancement (IA), Integrated Marketing & Communications, and IT-this position plays a key role in maintaining data integrity, supporting communications, and amplifying the reach and understanding of our educator programs. This position reports to the Chief Teaching & Learning Officer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Lead the strategy and development of program evaluation initiatives across the Teaching & Learning Department, including the annual educator leadership survey
  • Lead program evaluation implementation across Teaching & Learning programs, events and initiatives to ensure the collection of consistent, valuable data
  • Design and implement evaluation frameworks that deliver data-driven insights for improving Teaching & Learning programs, informing decision-making, and demonstrating impact
  • Lead Teaching & Learning participant and program data collection, analysis and data system refinement efforts, including oversight of our Institutional Review Board (IRB) process
  • Provide project direction, support and supervision for project staff, contractors, interns and volunteers
  • Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, contracts, and resource plans
  • Support fundraising initiatives in collaboration with the Teaching & Learning leadership team, and in alignment with the strategic objectives of the organization
  • Contribute thought leadership and strategic vision alignment to the Teaching & Learning programs and projects
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to effectively communicate the vision, goals, and activities of the Teaching & Learning Department across the institution as well as to external organizations, funders and audiences
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS degree and four years' experience in an education, data science, or science discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience collaborating with and working across teams and functions (IT, communications, evaluation, and program staff)
  • Experience in project management and program leadership including strategic planning, vision setting, and mission-driven decision-making
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of audiences, stakeholders, and participants of diverse social and cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Highly resourceful and collaborative team player, with the ability to be extremely effective independently
  • Strong working knowledge of Google Workspace, Salesforce, Basecamp and/or other collaboration and project management applications
  • Experience synthesizing qualitative and quantitative information into clear, engaging reports or narratives
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Understanding of education, museums, or nonprofit program environments
  • Experience with issue tracking software such as JIRA and comfort in both Mac and PC platforms
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT
  • Able to move from place to place and utilize computer terminal and general office equipment; lift and carry 15 pounds short distances
