The University of Southern Californias (USCs) Information Technology Services is seeking a talented Unified Communications (UC) Engineer with an exceptional commitment to service excellence to join its team. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate for the position of UC Engineer must meet the following qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc., or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in information technology or higher education.
  • Experience supporting large-scale telephony implementations and upgrades and delivering reliable, quality service within a higher education environment.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with network transport, design, planning, and implementation.
  • Knowledge of voice applications and unified communications (UC) service networks, including network appliances (eg, unified communications managers, voice switches, media gateways, routers, load balancers, firewalls).
  • Experience with service management, asset management, and billing tools (eg, ServiceNow, Pinnacle).
  • Knowledge of video conferencing, telepresence, and web conference solutions.
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and technical documentation skills.
  • Experience with PBX, voicemail, call center management, and carrier services (eg, Avaya Communications Manager, 2nd Nature, Avaya Aura Messaging, Frontier Centrex Manager, AT&T Centrex Manager).
  • Ability to assess the criticality of problems and prioritize actions based on importance and urgency.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members.
  • Experience presenting ideas and solutions in non-technical, business-friendly terms.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate for the position of UC Engineer has the following qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer information systems, etc.
  • More than four years of experience in information technology or higher education.
THE WORK YOU WILL DO
The UC Engineer provides engineering and technical support for unified communications infrastructure and services to ensure systems are operating at peak efficiency with little or no downtime. The UC Engineer assists in designing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining university telephony equipment across multiple platforms. The role may involve providing technical and training assistance to other ITS teams, and ensuring that industry best practices are applied across all relevant technologies and procedures. As a member of ITS, the UC Engineer demonstrates ITS values in action.
Job Accountabilities
The UC Engineer:
  • Works collaboratively with others within ITS and other campus departments to deliver highly reliable unified communications services. Creates and maintains detailed written documentation. Shares experiences and subject matter expertise with other ITS staff through written and oral presentations. Provides timely communications to stakeholders, technical staff, and management as required.
  • Collaborates with team members to establish project plans, schedules and priorities. Participates in the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies, procedures, and associated training plans for unified communications administration, operation, and disaster recovery.
  • Delivers new unified communications services to all USC customers. Engages customers to resolve unified communications issues. Consults with campus departments to determine suitability of devices in accordance with approved policies and procedures.
  • Facilitates innovation and continuous improvement by leveraging the latest industry knowledge and maintaining currency with new technologies. Stays informed of new developments in unified communications by reading journals and other pertinent publications, communicating with vendors, and participating in professional organizations, meetings, conferences, seminars, and training courses.
  • Designs, configures, troubleshoots, and maintains university telephony equipment across multiple platforms.
  • Analyzes data to both proactively and reactively resolve issues. Works with industry experts and vendors to find and implement effective applications of technology and resolve complex problems, including submission of bug reports to vendors. Acts as a good steward of university resources during contract negotiations, billing, and audits.
  • Contributes to an inclusive environment that values differences by building and maintaining collaborative relationships with team members, peers, and ITS leaders. Actively embodies ITS values and behaviors, including accountability, ethics, and best-in-class customer service. Contributes to a culture of trust and transparency by sharing information broadly, openly, and deliberately.
  • Supports the vision for Network Engineering. Works closely with team members and management to implement and support effective solutions for unified communications. Maintains currency with technology, standards, and best practices. Supports process improvement efforts within the team and across ITS.
